INDONESIA

10 metres per minute

Indonesia has a reputation among bike tourers of having the steepest hills in the world. I shall confirm that this is absolutely true. The road goes often directly to the top of the hill from the valley floor creating an illusion that you are riding towards a wall. The picture gives a tiny hint how an approaching hill might looks like in the best case.

Pushing the bike? No freaking change.

The steepest hills were so steep that one 500m climb could literally take me 45 minutes to deal with in 90% humidity and in 35C. Only giving 110% took me a couple of meters forward. Pushing the bike? No freaking change.

I had planned to cycle to the crater of the 2329m high Mt. Bromo, it would be nice to see the first volcano of my life. When I eventually was at the crossroads where the 2250m climb to the crater started, I wasn’t that keen anymore.

Java had wore me out during the past week. I just wanted to get to Bali as quickly as possible and finish cycling Asia.
