Camping on a school yard in Phattalung, Thailand. The school land manager invited me to join their table in the back of the yard, where they were had a bucket of ice, sparkling water and a big bottle of whiskey. I was offered a drink and then another one, while explaining my endeavors. Nice.
A few seconds later he was beheaded with a big knife.
Suddenly someone put a smart phone on my face playing a video of a young man on his knees. A few seconds later he was beheaded with a big knife. After I opened my eyes after the schock there was a man on the screen holding a head. “Yesterday, city close by, don’t go there.” They were all laughing. Disgusted and confused I left them soon after.
I’m coming from a different world; secure and predictable. I haven’t ever seen anything like that in my life, and it seemed to be a pretty normal thing to see for those middle aged guys in he back of the school yard. Sure I had heard of insurgency in the Southeast Thailand and planned my route alto avoid the area, but still getting a first hand evidence of the cruelties so close the unstable area was a little frightening.
