Qinghai, China
Finding a scenic camp spot could be hard in the dark. One night I ended up sleeping on a back balcony of a Taoist Temple at 3700m. I felt a bit stupid in the morning when a monk let me know that there was a free warm visitors hut to sleep in right next to the temple.
I winter-proofed my sleeping system in Golmud by having a second mattress (a thin foam one) and a second down jacket (one as a duvet on the upper body, one around the feet). I found this to be around 1kg lighter, and a lot cheaper solution than going for a second sleeping bag available in Golmud. This proved to be warm enough system for me on the Tibetan plateau in the early winter, at least as long as I dried everything really well in the morning sun. Normally I woke up in the morning all the sleeping gear frozen of moisture from my body as I didn’t have any vapor barrier clothing or a vapor barrier liner.
