Taklamakan Desert, China
Just a quick real time update from China. During the past three weeks I cycled 2500km across the Taklamakan desert (the second biggest sands desert in the world) and a 3000m high desert-like plateau on the north side of Himalayan range. It’s getting chilly here, everything freezes at night.
I’m currently in a mining town of Golmud, where I collected my 31 day visa extension this morning. My route continues across the Tibetan plateau towards Vietnam at very high altitude. Multiple nearly 5000m passes and over 1000km at 4000m. I’m prepared to sleep in -20 Celsius. Let’s hopes that the roads stay clear of snow and ice, as I’m not having proper winter tires.
Making it to Vietnam by cycling by the time my visa ends is unlikely, but not totally impossible. Let’s see how it goes. Anyway I’m mentally prepared to eventually take a bus to Vietnam if necessary.
Peace out.
