Caspian Sea, Iran. Photo: borrowed for illustration
One night I was having a swim in the Caspian Sea, or more like just sitting in shallow water watching stars, when I started to see dim blinks around me. First I thought that I was seeing reflections of the starts, but when the number of reflections suddenly multiplied, I realized that I was surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of tiny fluorescent animals. They stayed close to my body and blinked like hundreds of fireflies around me illuminating my pale skin under water. I moved my hand under water and the swirly current following my hand triggered dozens of firefly like creatures to blink. Imagine a thick sigare smoke that you run your open hand through. Replace the smoke with fireflies and place the scene under water. Incredible.
I have heard of some algae in the middle of the Pacific to be fluorescent, but didn’t expect to see anything like that in a big lake in Iran.
